Taking your pet on an RV trip in Europe
Have you planned an amazing RV trip but don't want to leave your beloved pet at home? In this blog, we tell you everything about taking your pet along in the RV.
General Obligations and Regulations
In Europe, most countries have specific laws regarding bringing pets into the country. It is advisable to check the regulations of the country you are planning to visit.
When transporting pets in Europe, it is mandatory for pets to have an EU pet passport. This passport contains all the pet's information and proof that the pet has received the necessary vaccinations.
It is also wise to check or implant a microchip. In some countries, it is mandatory, but it is also very useful so you can always find them abroad. Besides the microchip, it is also recommended to take a good photo of your pet. This not only gives you a cherished memory but also helps others to find them if they get lost. You will always have a good photo on hand.
Lastly, it is smart to look into a travel suitcase/bag, special seatbelt, or travel crate. This is recommended for your pet's safety in case of an emergency stop, but in some countries, it is also mandatory when travelling with your pet in an RV.
Options with Rental Companies
Most rental companies in Europe allow you to take your dog or cat on the trip. This is an additional option that must always be requested and approved in advance, and often a pet fee is applicable. Certified service dogs are always allowed to travel in the RV.
A few rental companies that offer this option in Europe include Indie Campers, McRent, Rent Easy, Apollo, Avis, De Camper Club, and Touring Cars. Some rental companies do not charge a pet fee but do charge a cleaning fee. With others, the cleaning fee is included in the pet fee. The fee is often around €150, depending on the location, rental company, and the condition of the RV upon return. If the RV is not returned in its original condition, an additional cleaning fee may be charged.
Not all rental locations offer this option, but our team can always check with a specific location to see if it is a possibility.
Tips for a Smooth Trip with Your Pet
It may be a new way of traveling for you, but it is entirely new for your pet. To ensure the trip goes as smoothly as possible, good preparation is essential.
If possible, bring your pet's favorite cushion or basket from home so they feel at home and don't lie on your bed or pillows. Make sure to bring enough food, water, and treats. Try to maintain their current routine as much as possible. Additionally, a good leash and plenty of poop bags are essential for the stops where you and your pet can get some fresh air and stretch your legs.
If your pet suffers from car sickness or if you are unsure whether your pet has this issue, it is advisable to bring medication to ensure your loyal companion has a comfortable and peaceful trip.
