Northern Italy in 12 Days

Northern Italy combines everything you could want from an RV road trip: spectacular mountain scenery, crystal-clear lakes, historic cities and, of course, excellent Italian food. From the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites to the shores of Lake Como, there is plenty to discover along the way.

This 12-day itinerary starts and ends in Milan and takes you through some of the most beautiful landscapes of Northern Italy. Along the way, you'll visit alpine lakes, explore Verona, hike in the Dolomites and have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors.

Day 1: Arrive in Milan
After arriving in Milan, take some time to explore the city before starting your RV adventure. Visit famous landmarks such as the Duomo di Milano and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II or simply wander through the historic center. A fun way to discover more of the city is a guided bike tour, which takes you past both famous sights and lesser-known parts of Milan.

Spend the night in a hotel so you can pick up your RV and start your road trip fresh the following day.

Days 2 & 3: Milan – Lago di Ledro, approx. 190 km / 118 miles – 3 hours
Pick up your RV and leave Milan behind as you head toward Lago di Ledro, a peaceful alpine lake close to the much larger Lake Garda. Spend the following day enjoying the lake and surrounding mountains. Go swimming, rent a boat or visit the charming village of Pieve di Ledro for local food and markets.

Campground: Camping Al Lago, with pitches close to the water.

Day 4: Lago di Ledro – Verona, approx. 100 km / 62 miles – 2 hours
Travel south toward Verona. Along the way, consider a detour to Parco Naturale Regionale della Lessinia for a hike surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Once in Verona, explore the historic center, see Juliet's Balcony and visit the city's impressive Roman amphitheater. Verona is smaller than Milan or Florence, making it easy to explore many of its highlights on foot.

Campground: Agricamping Il Parco Dell’Adige, just outside the city.

Days 5 & 6: Verona – Seiser Alm, approx. 190 km / 118 miles – 3 hours
After a day in the city, return to the mountains and travel toward Seiser Alm in the spectacular Dolomites. Spend the following day surrounded by some of Northern Italy's most impressive mountain scenery. The area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, biking and climbing, with trails for different experience levels.

Campground: Camping Seiser Alm, where you can relax while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains.

Day 7: Seiser Alm – Lago di Braies, approx. 100 km / 62 miles – 2 hours
Continue deeper into the Dolomites toward Lago di Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, this is one of Italy's most famous alpine lakes. Walk around the lake or rent one of the traditional wooden rowboats for a different view of the scenery. During the busy summer season, road access can be restricted, so check the current requirements and reserve parking or access in advance when necessary.

Campground: Camping Olympia, approximately 20 minutes from the lake.

Days 8 & 9: Lago di Braies – Bormio, approx. 300 km / 186 miles – 6 hours
Today is the longest driving day of the trip as you travel west through the mountains toward Bormio. Consider breaking up the journey with a stop in Bolzano or Romallo. Bormio is famous as a winter sports destination, but summer is equally rewarding. Its location near Stelvio National Park makes it an excellent base for hiking and cycling. After an active day in the mountains, relax in one of Bormio's famous thermal baths.

There is an RV parking area in Bormio as well as several campgrounds in the surrounding area.

Days 10 & 11: Bormio – Lake Como, approx. 150 km / 93 miles – 2.5 hours
Leave the mountains behind and travel toward beautiful Lake Como. Spend the following day exploring the lake and its surrounding villages. Visit places such as Varenna, Bellagio and Como, enjoy Italian food beside the water or spend the day hiking, cycling or windsurfing. In summer, various towns around the lake also host events and fireworks.

There are several campgrounds around Lake Como, making it easy to find a base for exploring the area.

Day 12: Lake Como – Milan, approx. 85 km / 53 miles – 1.5 hours
Enjoy one final morning beside Lake Como before making your way back to Milan. Take in the views across the lake one last time before returning your RV according to your rental company's instructions. After 12 days of alpine landscapes, Italian cities, mountain trails and beautiful lakes, your Northern Italy RV adventure comes to an end.
