Scandinavia: roundtrip Sweden and Norway

For many travelers, the breathtaking scenery is the main reason to explore Scandinavia by RV. Vast forests, crystal-clear lakes, impressive fjords and plenty of peace and open space make Norway and Sweden perfect destinations for an RV vacation.

This 14-day itinerary starts and ends in Oslo and combines the natural beauty of Norway and Sweden with cities such as Stockholm and Uppsala. Along the way, you'll discover national parks, historic mountain towns and the Swedish coast. Thanks to the long summer days, you'll also have plenty of daylight to enjoy the scenery and outdoor activities along the way.

Arrive in Oslo
If you're traveling to Oslo from abroad, consider spending one or more nights in the Norwegian capital before picking up your RV. Oslo is a surprisingly green city where modern architecture, history and nature come together. Visit the striking Oslo Opera House, learn more about Norwegian history at the Norsk Folkemuseum or enjoy the scenery around the Oslofjord.

Days 1 & 2: Oslo – Fåberg, approx. 190 km / 118 miles – 2.5 hours
Pick up your RV in Oslo and begin your journey through Scandinavia. From the capital, travel north toward Fåberg, near Lillehammer. The surrounding area is a wonderful place to spend your first days enjoying Norway's natural beauty. Go hiking or visit Hunderfossen, a family amusement park inspired by Norwegian fairy tales and legends. RV rentals from Oslo are available through Touring Cars, Indie Campers, McRent and Rent Easy. Keep in mind that some rental locations may be closed on weekends.

Day 3: Fåberg – Røros, approx. 260 km / 162 miles – 4 hours
Continue through the Norwegian countryside toward Røros. This historic mining town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and almost feels like a large open-air museum. Walk past the characteristic wooden houses, learn about the history of the old copper mines and visit the impressive Røros Church. The town's traditional character and mountainous surroundings make it a memorable stop on your journey.

Days 4 & 5: Røros – Sonfjället National Park, approx. 165 km / 103 miles – 2.5 hours
Today you'll cross the border into Sweden and travel toward Sonfjället National Park. One of Europe's oldest national parks, it is known for its vast forests and mountain landscapes. Spend a full day exploring the area on foot. The park is home to moose, bears, lynx and other wildlife, so keep your eyes open while hiking and always maintain a safe distance from wild animals.

Day 6: Sonfjället National Park – Hudiksvall, approx. 250 km / 155 miles – 3.5 hours
Leave the Swedish wilderness behind and travel east toward Hudiksvall on the Gulf of Bothnia. Hudiksvall is one of the oldest towns in northern Sweden. Take a walk along the waterfront and see the characteristic wooden fishermen's houses that are reminders of the town's maritime history.

Day 7: Hudiksvall – Uppsala, approx. 230 km / 143 miles – 2.5 hours
Travel south to Uppsala, one of Sweden's best-known university cities. The city has a long history and offers plenty of art, culture and historic attractions. Take some time to explore the city center. Nearby, you can also visit Sigtuna, one of Sweden's oldest towns and an interesting place to learn more about the country's Viking history.

Days 8 & 9: Uppsala – Stockholm, approx. 70 km / 44 miles – 1 hour
Today it's only a short drive to Stockholm. The Swedish capital is spread across several islands and surrounded by water, creating a wonderful combination of city life and nature. Explore the colorful streets of Gamla Stan, visit one of the city's museums or relax in its parks and along the waterfront. With two days in Stockholm, you'll have plenty of time to discover the different sides of the city.

There are several campgrounds outside the city center where you can stay with your RV, including Bredäng Camping Stockholm.

Day 10: Stockholm – Linköping, approx. 200 km / 124 miles – 2.5 hours
Leave Stockholm behind and continue to Linköping. This historic city is an interesting stop for travelers who enjoy culture and history. Visit Gamla Linköping, an open-air museum where historic buildings, streets and stores offer a glimpse into Sweden's past. Afterwards, relax at a campground in or around the city.

Day 11: Linköping – Varberg, approx. 300 km / 186 miles – 4 hours
Continue toward Sweden's west coast and the charming seaside town of Varberg. Enjoy the coastline, surrounding nature and relaxed atmosphere. One of the town's main attractions is Varberg Fortress. This impressive fort played an important role in Scandinavian history for centuries and was later also used as a prison.

Day 12: Varberg – Marstrand, approx. 120 km / 75 miles – 1.5 hours
Follow the west coast north toward Marstrand. This small island is known for its maritime atmosphere and sailing events. Leave your RV on the mainland and take the ferry to the island. Marstrand is best explored on foot. Walk along the harbor and past historic houses before visiting Carlsten Fortress, which overlooks the island from its elevated position.

Day 13: Marstrand – Trollhättan, approx. 75 km / 47 miles – 1.5 hours
Continue to Trollhättan for your final overnight stay in Sweden. The city is best known for its locks and waterfalls. Explore the impressive waterways, walk along the canal or visit the local market. Depending on the day and season, moose safaris are also available in the surrounding area.

Day 14: Trollhättan – Oslo, approx. 250 km / 155 miles – 3 hours
Today you'll cross the border once again and return to Oslo. Enjoy the Scandinavian scenery one last time before arriving back in the Norwegian capital. Keep your RV return time in mind. If your RV needs to be returned in the morning, we recommend spending your final night at a campground close to the rental location.

After approximately 2,110 km / 1,311 miles through Norway and Sweden, your Scandinavian RV adventure comes to an end.
